General Presentation
VTT, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, is a government organisation established by law and operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. VTT operates under the public mandate established for it by the Act on the Technical Research Centre of Finland 953/2010 (this Act entered into force 1st of December 2010 and supersedes the Act on the Technical Research Centre of Finland (144/1972) and all amendments subsequently made to it).
The Research Centre, with its headquarters in Espoo, is impartial non-profit expert organisation and carries out the mission of creating high level scientific and techno-economic knowledge and know-how for the needs of industry and knowledge-based society.
VTT develops and manages strategic research activities in the interest of the Finnish economy and society and thereby contributes in creating prerequisites for sustainable growth, employment and well-being. These research activities are planned and implemented as multi-year, coordinated research and innovation programmes. In 2013, VTT’s turnover was 279 million €, with highly educated personnel of 2600. VTT receives third of its total income directly from the Finnish government. This allows VTT to carry out the high-risk strategic research and investment in research and technology infrastructures, which are necessary to generate the knowledge and know-how required for fulfilling VTT’s public mandate.
VTT’s activities are focused on three areas: Knowledge intensive products and services, Smart industry and energy systems, and Solutions for natural resources and environment. VTT is impact-driven, with the following value propositions: Empowerment by digitalisation; Sustainability from smart communities; Disruptive industrial ecosystems; Clean energy systems; Prosperity from natural resources. VTT’s contribution to the targets and priorities of Europe 2020 strategy is channelled through close collaboration with the Finnish Ministry of Employment and the Economy, with regional innovation networks throughout Finland and with numerous European platforms and partnerships.
VTT has 70 years of experience in addressing the needs of industry and the knowledge-based society. VTT has a vast experience of two decades working in various EU projects as a partner and as a coordinator. On average, the share of industry partners was 42% in those consortia where VTT was engaged in FP7. In 2013 alone, VTT was involved in 471 EU-funded research projects. Ranked among the leading European research and technology organisations, VTT is committed to responsible collaboration for achieving the Europe 2020 goals by networking with Finnish and European actors in the global context.
