RWTH Aachen fuer Institut für Kraftfahrwesen Aachen
General Presentation
Following the centennial tradition of the Aachen University (RWTH Aachen) the Institut für Kraftfahrwesen Aachen (IKA) is engaged in teaching and industry-orientated research-projects on vehicles - e.g. cars, commercial vehicles, busses and motorcycles - as well as neighbouring issues such as traffic and environmental conditions (noise, exhaust gas, etc.).
The “Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge (ika)”, active in the field of applied automotive research, is part of RWTH Aachen University. RWTH Aachen University is recognised as one of the leading universities world-wide in vehicle technology. Research activities conducted by ika cover the complete vehicle design process, including experimental testing of prototypes and production vehicles. Corresponding to its main areas of work, ika comprises seven departments: Chassis – Body – Drivetrain – Acoustics – Electronics – Driver Assistance – Strategy and Process Development. This wide range of competencies enables the analysis and optimisation of the vehicle as a whole, paying attention to the complex interactions between its individual subsystems. Lead by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Lutz Eckstein, ika’s staff comprises over 60 scientific and 40 non-scientific employees, supported by more than 100 student assistants.
IKA increasingly links research projects with development tasks that have to be financed by third-party funding. Therefore the IKA´s equipment allows in principle the kind of work done in the automotive and supplier industry.
Since the first introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), ika has been one of the leading organisations in their development and assessment. Within the European projects euroFOT and TeleFOT, ika is currently analysing the impacts of ADAS as well as nomadic devices.
Public funding, industrial sponsoring as well as a great deal of personal effort on behalf of the institute staff helped to make this equipment accessible. Correct and punctual realisations of research and development tasks are thus achieved. IKA´s activities are tailored to industrial demands and comprise the departments: Chassis - Body - Drivetrain - Acoustics - Electronics - Traffic.
