With the goal of improving both traffic safety and traffic flow in the future, the partners are working together to design, develop, and evaluate novel driver assistance systems, knowledge and information technologies, solutions for efficient traffic management and C2C and C2I communication for future cooperative vehicle applications.

Aktiv stands for „Adaptive and Cooperative Technologies for the Intelligent Traffic“. This German research initiative brings together 28 partners - automobile manufacturers and suppliers, electronic, telecommunication and software companies as well as research institutions. The four-year cooperation will continue through 2010.

The initiative Aktiv consists of 3 projects: Traffic Management, Active Safety and Cooperative Cars.

Objectives

Future road traffic requires driver assistance- and traffic management systems , which

  • improve traffic safety for all participants,
  • decrease the driver load and efficiently guide him to his destination,
  • avoid traffic jams and better utilize the existing road capacity,
  • make economic and ecological sense and have a sound legal basis,
  • are accepted by the society and the user

Within the research initiative Aktiv the project Aktiv-AS (Active Safety) deals with the development of driver assistance systems with a main focus on safety relevant applications. Within the project Aktiv-VM (Traffic Management) technologies are developed, which will contribute to improve the performance of the road network. The project CoCar aims at the development of cellular mobile communication technologies for cooperative vehicle applications (C2C and C2I).

All projects together will reveal, how intelligent vehicles and efficient traffic management systems will interact in the future. The alliance of research and development combined with practical tests in Aktiv will significantly help to ensure our mobility and is of importance to maintain the german competitive capability.

Applications and equipment

Applications tested

1. Traffic Management: the project consists of 8 subprojects. In four of these, navigation and guidance systems will be developed, e.g., traffic signal controllers that autonomously react to disturbances in normal traffic flow. The other four will create novel technologies for data exchange and processing.

2. Active Safety: the project consists of 5 subprojects. Four of these are developing assistance systems for pro-active emergency braking, integrated lateral assistance, intersection assistance, and safety of pedestrians and cyclists. The fifth, horizontal subproject will concentrate on driver attention and safety issues.

3. Cooperative Cars - CoCars: the research focuses on the extension of the mobile communication system for reliable traffic data exchange among vehicles or between vehicles and traffic centers.
