Driving style feedback for novice drivers. Continuation of Tele-ISA experiments.

Novice car drivers, especially young men, are over-represented in road accident statistics. New ways are needed to reduce their risks, and there is a need to motivate young drivers towards responsible driving. Trafisafe was a Finnish field trial project, in which a new driving style feedback system was tested with 75 novice drivers and their parents. The results were promising and the test users have clearly indicated an interest in the feedback service and the Trafisafe concept.

The Trafisafe field trial was launched in June 2013 and the study was extended in November to cover the winter months through April 2014.

Objectives

The aim of the Trafisafe project was to motivate young novice drivers, along with their parents, towards responsible driving. The target group was young male drivers who have recently obtained their driving licence and their parent (mainly father) who is an experienced driver. The reference group in this study was part of the test group (young male drivers) who did not receive any feedback.

Results

(to be updated in coming months with the publication of final report) Preliminary analyses of the safe driving feedback show promising outcomes. Novice drivers who got feedback performed much better than those who did not get feedback. It seems that the accident peak of young drivers could be reduced to the level of normal drivers.

The data is available for scientific research under an NDA. There are ongoing discussions to use it in a PhD study in the University of Leeds. Contact Sami Koskinen, VTT.

GPS, accelerations (separate acceleration sensor), OBD-II data about fuel consumption, rpm. Additionally questionnaires, weather data. Data has been enriched with speed limit data from Finnish Digiroad.

Recruitment goals and methods

Recruited young drivers via their parents. The field trial had 70 father-son test pairs. The total number of users was above 200.

Weekly driving reports, web site feedback system, support e-mail, contacts if no data was received.
