“Test Site Norway” is the primary Norwegian site for testing and validation of new ITS technology, applications and services. The test site includes the main road network in the city of Trondheim and also encompasses:

  • Instrumented roads with wireless communication technologies based on CALM, including support for 5.9 GHz vehicle-to-roadside communication.
  • Instrumented vehicles for use in project activities and for demonstration.
  • Infrastructure with instrumented multi-modal transport network.
  • Driving simulator including models and real-time feeds from the road network in Trondheim.

Universities, research institutions and companies are invited to participate and utilize this infrastructure primarily for the FOT (Field Operational Test) activities within ICT Call 6. Test Site Norway enables testing and validation of:

  • Technologies for wireless communication and network infrastructure, including IPv6 networking, routing and security.
  • Applications and services for improved road safety, efficiency/infrastructure performance, reduced environment impact, infotainment, and other added value services.

Test Site Norway is unique due to:

  • A large number of roadside units
  • Right size city
    • Approx. 90.000 light vehicles
    • Population approx. 167.000
    • Easy to equip significant portion of vehicle fleet
  • Nordic climatical conditions
  • Multi-modality
    • Road
    • Railway
    • Short sea
  • One common network backbone
  • Close cooperation between actors within industry, public road administration, university, municipality and research institutions
  • Connection to many European R&D projects and activities like CVIS, Safespot, CityMobil, Smartfreight, IEEE, CALM, ISO, ETSI,IETF and European network of living labs.
